Rat droppings are much larger than mouse droppings, about the size of a jellybean. They're dark brown or black, elongated with blunt ends, and usually clustered near food, nests, or along travel routes.
Check bags of rice, wheat, pet food, birdseed, and grass seed for gnaw marks and holes. Look under the sink, in low cupboards, and behind appliances. Rats prefer dark, secluded spots.
Rats are excellent climbers and squeeze through small openings. Check walls, foundations, windows, and door seals. If you can see daylight, a rat can likely get through. Look for droppings, gnaw marks, and burrows in stored items or the ground.
Rats make heavier thumps and bumps than mice as they move through walls, attics, and floors. Listen for scratching, gnawing, or squeaking, especially at night when they're most active.

Standing water draws lots of pests, including rodents. Eliminate it around your property to give them one less reason to stick around.
Don't leave bird feed, grass seed, or pet food in the bag. Strong, locking totes or buckets keep your storage from becoming their grocery store.
Any hole bigger than your thumb is big enough for a rat. Crawlspace vents with hoses or pipes running through them are common culprits. Close holes with expanding foam and steel wool.
One man's trash is a rodent's treasure. Throw away food scraps after meals, wash or load dirty dishes, and take garbage to the outside bin regularly.
